KATTAPPANA: The expert team of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) which visited Anakkara has found the area most suited for setting up the proposed airport in Idukki district.

The team which surveyed the area suggested clearing up Poovinchimala and Sankurundampara, which are the only hindrance for flights movement at Anakkara.

Land is available from Kurivikkattupara to Pampupara and only a few families have to be rehabilitated in connection with the project.
350 acres

About 350 acres of paddy fields earmarked for setting up a housing colony and the land owned by a few private parties will be utilised for the airport, official sources said.

The amount for clearing the area and making the approach road is also less in Anakkara and two roads already available in the area can be linked to the approach road, according to the expert team.

The climatic and geographic conditions in Anakkara and availability of plain land without much buildings or other structures and minimum deforestation are other factors considered by the expert team.

Another location Perunkala failed to get the approval of the AAI expert team.

The whole area on Eighth Mile-Puttady Road was surveyed by the team and they had discussions with the District Collector Ashok Kumar Singh.

The only problem raised by the team is the clearing work needed for Poovinchimala and Sankurundampara, they said.

The expert team comprised AAI general manager Irulappan and joint general managers N.V.Atle and Pradeep Sharma.

It will submit the detailed report for final clearance by AAI soon, they said
